Exploring Japan by campervan

Exploring Japan by campervan

Everything you need to travel Japan by campervan: customs, permits, itineraries from Osaka to Hokkaido, what to eat and practical tips from our own experience.

15 articles
22.000 km travelled
15 months on the road
44/47 regions visited

Travelling Japan by campervan is a completely different experience from the postcard version: narrow roads winding between rice paddies, mountain onsen you can only reach on wheels, 24-hour konbini that become your evening lifeline, and a set of unwritten rules you’d better learn fast if you don’t want to stick out as a rude tourist.

We crossed Japan from north to south, from the traffic of Osaka to the remote villages of Hokkaido, through temples, festivals, and the occasional mishap that comes with driving a vehicle built for Europe in a country that drives on the other side of the road.

Here you’ll find every practical guide, itinerary and story we wrote along the way — from customs paperwork to the questions we asked ourselves before we ever set off.
