Travelling Japan by campervan is a completely different experience from the postcard version: narrow roads winding between rice paddies, mountain onsen you can only reach on wheels, 24-hour konbini that become your evening lifeline, and a set of unwritten rules you’d better learn fast if you don’t want to stick out as a rude tourist.

We crossed Japan from north to south, from the traffic of Osaka to the remote villages of Hokkaido, through temples, festivals, and the occasional mishap that comes with driving a vehicle built for Europe in a country that drives on the other side of the road.
