During our campervan trip through Portugal we decided to also visit this city overlooking the Douro, famous for its azulejos, Port wine and the melancholy of fado.
Despite the rain, we strolled through the historic alleys and discovered the main attractions. The 90s are still felt here through the bullet holes in the walls of houses, in the cemeteries scattered here and there, in the museums.
As in the rest of the country, in Sarajevo 4 different religions blend together, along with different cultures, so you find yourself strolling among churches, Orthodox cathedrals, mosques and synagogues, between the tolling of bells and the muezzin’s call to prayer.
We visited the city over two half-days, but the itinerary we’re sharing can perfectly be done in a single day.
For getting around, since a couple of destinations are on the outskirts of the city and absolutely not reachable on foot, we used our van, but we saw plenty of people making use of the many taxis.

Zagreb in One Day: A Walking and Campervan Tour of the Croatian Capital

The capital of Croatia, Zagreb, is a city that keeps all the charm of old Europe while at the same time boasting numerous museums and contemporary art galleries.

Ljubljana in One Day: 8 Things to Do to Discover the Capital of Slovenia at Its Best

Ljubljana is one of the lesser-known and smallest European capitals, yet it holds a special charm mixed with a convivial, youthful atmosphere. We arrived in this region after visiting Normandy and Brittany, and we were thrilled to discover these areas all the way to the regional capital Bordeaux, before heading to Bayonne and Biarritz.

Porto and Surroundings in 5 Days

In this article we’ll take you with us to discover Porto and three other towns of Northern Portugal, which we reached aboard our van. You can consider this itinerary even if you decide to rent a car after flying into Porto.

The weather wasn’t the most favourable, but we still got to admire beautiful places!

Road Trip in Portugal: the Alentejo

The Alentejo usually isn’t a top-of-mind destination when thinking of Portugal. And yet this area is dotted with small villages and rich in nature, ideal for those looking for a bit more peace than the more touristy Algarve region. In this article we list the destinations we reached following only the Atlantic coast aboard our van.

Ready to discover fairy-tale villages and beaches rich in history? Not without stepping into a boulangerie and walking out with a baguette under your arm :)
If your plan is to visit Normandy together with Brittany, head to the article about it so you can combine the two itineraries.
We also recommend taking a look at a couple of destinations in Hauts-de-France!

Austria by Campervan with Dog and Cat

We wandered by van

We were captivated by the landscapes and the kindness of the people, as well as the beauty of several touristy and lesser-known sites. It’s definitely a trip we’d recommend to anyone, not just by van but also arriving by plane and making use of the excellent public transport network.
