How to Enter South Korea from Russia: The Updated Guide for Overlanders [2025 Update]

Travelling through Asia by campervan is an exciting adventure, and reaching South Korea from Russia is a unique experience, but it requires care and good organisation. In this updated guide we’ll walk you step by step through how to get organised, what to expect, and which documents to prepare to get through this crossing without a hitch.

Warning
South Korea does not allow the import of type-approved vehicles such as vans or trucks that don’t comply with the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic  .

Updates

Since August 2025 the Korean company GNL Ferry  has launched a new Sokcho-Vladivostok route.

The DuWon ferry from Vladivostok to Donghae

The most commonly used sea link for anyone travelling with a vehicle (motorbike, car or campervan) from Vladivostok to South Korea. The DuWon Shipping ferry  is reliable, but the customs procedures and the restrictions on luggage and materials on board require proper preparation.

The ferry from Vladivostok to Donghae departs every Thursday and takes 24 hours. Since 2025 it’s possible to continue on and arrive in Sakaiminato, Japan (the guide is just a click away).

In case of typhoons or bad weather, the crossing can be cancelled and you’ll have to wait for the following week.

You’ll find the DuWon offices in Vladivostok at this address  .

The GNL Ferry from Vladivostok to Sokcho

Since August 2025 a new route from Vladivostok to Sokcho has launched. According to their website  (Korean and Russian only):

Since this route is completely new, we don’t have any further information about it. If you want to go ahead with this ferry, we recommend contacting Yuri and the ferry company in advance.

How to organise entry from Russia into South Korea

Carefully following the procedures described below is essential to successfully organise the Vladivostok to Donghae crossing. The complexity of Russian and Korean customs regulations, combined with the need to coordinate documents and precise deadlines with local agents, requires attention to detail and promptness. Any omission or mistake can lead to delays, extra costs, or being unable to board. These instructions are essential to ensure a smooth, hassle-free trip.

1. Contact Yuri, the trusted customs agent

Among the overlanders who have already travelled this route, Yuri from Links Ltd is the go-to person for all customs procedures on the Russian side. It’s essential to contact him well in advance to organise the documentation needed for customs clearance. His contact is: Yuri - Links Ltd  (ymelnik@links-ltd.com)

2. Book the ferry in advance

The DuWon ferry has limited capacity and often fills up quickly. Booking in advance is essential to secure a spot and a smooth passage. Their contacts are: Chloe at DuWon  (sbson@dwship.co.kr, cc’ing jnjeong@dwship.co.kr and sykim@dwship.co.kr)

For convenience we’ve cc’d two other contacts to be sure of getting a reply. We recommend asking Yuri for the most up-to-date contacts.

Warning
To get approval to import your vehicle, Korean customs requires a confirmed booking for your next departure from Korea, with a mandatory booking for the next ship, not just a rough date.
Make sure to contact Camellia Line in good time if you want to continue your trip to Japan, or Mr. Youn from Assured Sea & Air Co., Ltd.  (uhy@assured.co.kr) if you want to ship your vehicle somewhere else in the world.

3. Prepare and send the photo documentation

Customs will ask you in advance for detailed photos of the vehicle and personal documents

Documents required by Russian customs (Yuri)

You’ll be asked for the following documents and photos:

  • vehicle (front, sides and rear).
  • chassis number (VIN) as shown on the metal plate.
  • vehicle registration document.
  • passport and Russian visa for driver and passengers.
  • Russian temporary import document.

Documents required by Korean customs (DuWon)

You’ll be asked for the following photos:

  • vehicle (front, sides and rear).
  • chassis number (VIN) as shown on the metal plate.
  • vehicle registration document.
  • passport.
  • international driving permit (here’s the guide to getting one) (guide in Italian).
  • installed accessories

For this last point, Korean customs will give you a form to fill in with photos of all the accessories and spare parts installed on the vehicle. These photos must be emailed before the crossing, and only once customs has given the go-ahead can you proceed with boarding.

Italians who want to visit South Korea can currently enter without needing to apply for a visa in advance. More information here.

4. Sort out your personal belongings

During the crossing, you can’t leave personal belongings inside the vehicle. We put everything we had (from clothes to pots and pans, even toilet paper!) into two suitcases bought in Vladivostok at the Chinese market here  .

Luggage restrictions:

  • Each person can bring up to 50 kg of luggage.
  • Food is allowed on board but not into Korea.
  • Gas is not allowed, so make sure to empty any gas bottles and declare them empty.
Warning: Italian gas bottles can’t be refilled in Korea, so you’ll need to buy a Korean bottle and adapters.

5. Technical stop in Vladivostok

When you arrive in Vladivostok, you hand over the vehicle and keys 3 days before departure. This happens on Monday morning, and the vehicle stays in a CCTV-monitored area. During this time Yuri will inspect the vehicle together with Russian customs officers and complete the paperwork, while the vehicle will be loaded on departure day by DuWon staff.

During that time you’ll need to find accommodation in the city. You can get around using the Yandex Go  taxi service.

In brief

  1. Contact Yuri.
  2. Contact DuWon.
  3. Send the required documentation to both parties.
  4. Arrive in Vladivostok well in advance.
  5. Hand over the empty vehicle on Monday morning at the port  .
  6. Wait for confirmation of the ship’s departure.

What to expect at customs

Customs in Vladivostok is quite strict but, with the right preparation and Yuri’s help, the process goes smoothly. Yuri isn’t cheap, but he’ll handle all the paperwork for you.

In South Korea too, if you follow the instructions, you won’t have any problems.

Practical tips for a hassle-free trip

Planning an overland trip from Russia to South Korea requires meticulous planning. Here are a few practical tips to help you handle the crossing at its best:

  • Early communication: Contact Yuri and DuWon at least a month in advance to avoid bureaucratic hiccups. Use English for all communications and make sure you’ve received written confirmation for every step.
  • Loading organisation: Before handing over the vehicle, make a detailed list of everything on board, including photos. This will make customs inspections easier and help you not forget anything. Use easily portable bags or containers for personal belongings, since they can’t stay in the vehicle.
  • Time management: Arrive in Vladivostok at least 2 weeks in advance to handle any unexpected issues, such as delays in customs procedures or ferry cancellations due to weather. Plan some activities in the city, like visiting the historic centre or Russky Island.
  • Extra budget: Keep an emergency fund for unexpected expenses, such as extra port taxes or shipping costs. Use services like Wise.  for international payments, avoiding high fees.

These precautions will let you handle the crossing with peace of mind and focus on the adventure that awaits you in South Korea.
